Topics include lossless data compression, prefix codes and entropy, dictionary techniques, B-W transform, run-length encoding, fax, lossy case, quantization, differential encoding, subband encoding, transform encoding.

Objectives

Students will have a basic understanding of the capabilities and limitations of data compression, an overview of the major techniques and knowledge of how they work, and the ability to use standard techniques.
