Content

The module provides a first insight into bioinformatics. For this purpose, selected exciting topics of bioinformatics are briefly presented in the lecture. In perspective, it will be explained how the basic knowledge acquired in the first two years of bioinformatics studies can be applied. The topics cover the whole range of bioinformatics, but vary in order to be up-to-date. The topics will be
In order to deepen the topics, the students work on the topics in exercises and summarize them. A selection of possible topics is: 1. what is bioinformatics? 2. from DNA to database: sequencing, assembly, 3. Darwin's heirs: family trees on the genome level, 4. metagenomics -from a handful of soil, 5. molecular machines - protein structures and their function, 6. designer drugs - active substances from the computer, 7. Vaccination against cancer - bioinformatics in vaccine design, 8. Well connected keeps better: analysis of biological networks, 9. It's hip to chip - from microarrays to personalized medicine, 10. The language of proteins - evolution of conserved protein structures. The acquired knowledge is deepened in exercises carried out independently.

Objectives

The students have an overview of the essential sub-areas of bioinformatics, such as sequencing, phylogeny, metagenomics and drug design and know the interrelationships of the sub-areas and can classify them in relation to each other. The students' interest in the basic courses is strengthened and the motivation for the specialist breadth of the study programme is conveyed.
